More of My Favorite Things: A Sleep Gift Guide

While you won’t find me frolicking in a dirndl dress in the Alps, I am singing the praises of some of my favorite sleep-related things. Perhaps the number one concern with new parents, and certainly one of the most contentious new parent topics, babies and sleep are big business. From a thousand-dollar bassinet — that boasts the ability to sleep train your baby — to melatonin, desperate parents turn to these gadgets for the promise of help.

Unfortunately, I’m the bearer of bad news. Most of the baby sleep products on the market — including the two above — are gimmicky or promote lousy sleep habits, which you want to avoid. However, there are some sleep products that I swear by and recommend to my clients — take a look:

For travel

Look we all know that travel can thwart the sleep routines of even the best sleepers, which is why it helps to have tools in your back pocket. If you’re traveling this holiday season, consider outfitting yourself with one of these:

1. Hushh for Baby

usb speaker

Don’t forget the white noise! Great for busy airports — or even chaotic visits with family — Hushh is a small, portable white noise machine that makes it easy to travel prepared. Outfitted with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, Hushh is compact and also allows for charging via micro-USB cord. Equipped with a clip, Hushh can be used even when you’re not traveling, clipping to your stroller for daily walks and other outings.

2. ‘LectroFan Kinder

lectro fan

Not necessarily made for travel, but the ‘LectroFan’s compact size and ability to be used without WiFi or an internet connection makes it perfect for travel. The ‘LectroFan Kinder plugs into an electrical outlet and easily pairs with your iOS or Android phone to provide over 70 high-fidelity, non-looping sound choices under the following categories: White Noise, Lullabies, Fan Sounds, and Nature Sounds.

Snuggle Time

Who doesn’t love a warm, soft, and snuggly sleep area? Create the perfect sleep environment with these comforting items:

3. Bitta Kidda Sleep Sack

baby wipes

If you’re not already using a sleep sack, it’s time to integrate one into your little one’s nursery. Not only do sleep sacks help promote safe sleep by removing blankets from the crib, but they can also help keep your baby’s body temperature regulated. The Bitta Kidda sleep sack combines two of my favorite sleep items for babies: a sleep sack and a lovey, or comfort object. With the attached lovies, both of which are strategically placed so that they do not cover baby’s face, your little one can learn how to self-soothe when it’s time to sleep, and keep themselves occupied during diaper changes — win-win!

4. Musy Mate

Crib toys are dangerous, so this is the closest you’ll see me come to recommending something additional for your little one’s crib. I suggest introducing a lovey into your baby’s crib so that they have something with them at all times that is a comfort to them but does not pose a danger. My recommendations are for two aden+anais products: the Musy Mate and Classic Security Blanket. Either one of these aden+anais products will work well as a comfort object for your little and come in a variety of different animals and styles.

For those of you who are more tech-minded, I have a few devices that fit the bill:

5. Hatch Baby Rest Night Light, Sound Machine, and Time-to-Rise

Bells and whistles are included with the Hatch Baby Rest Night Light (and sound machine, and time-to-rise). This is a product that will truly grow with your little one. Known for their quality, Hatch products are worth the investment, and the Baby Rest Night Light is no exception. All controlled by a convenient mobile app, you can adjust the soft light in your baby’s nursery, change the white noise filtering out, and even set an alert for older children, letting them know when it’s okay to get out of bed in the morning.

6. HoMedics SoundSpa

Sound machine

If you don’t want a ton of features, and white noise is all you’re after, HoMedics SoundSpa is the way to go. HoMedics has an entire line of sound machines, but I still swear by the original SoundSpa. Small, sleek, simple, the SoundSpa features six sounds — White Noise, Thunder, Ocean, Rain, Summer Night, and Brook — and a built-in timer to help your little one sleep without outside noises.

8. Honeywell Germ-Free Cool Moisture Humidifier

With a built-in UV sanitizing bulb and filter, the Honeywell Germ-Free Cool Mist Humidifier ensures that only the cleanest moist air is being filtered into your room. Humidifiers help ease breathing and help avoid the drying effects of the heat during the winter months.

9. OK to Wake! Alarm Clock and Night Light

OK to wake

Believe it or not, there will come a time that your little one becomes a super sleeper, and when that time comes, you want a product that will take them to the next level. The OK to Wake! clock is perfect for toddlers, preschoolers, and early elementary-age children with a proclivity for early waking. You set the hour you wish your toddler to wake (or stay in bed until), and the OK to Wake! clock glows green when it’s okay for them to get out of bed. OK to Wake! also features a digital display, so your child can read the time. Additional options include a night light feature (glowing yellow instead of green, so as not to confuse your little one) and alarm clock. All-in-all, the OK to Wake! clock is the perfect item for teaching sleep responsibility to your little ones.

10. Gift of Sleep Gift Card

Because there’s no greater gift than the gift of sleep, right? If you want to start the new year off with healthy sleep, ask for a gift certificate this holiday season!
