Why Aren’t They Napping?!?

May 21, 2013

For this week’s blog post I’d like to discuss a topic that seems to come up quite a bit with my clients.  What to do when it appears that your little one has gone on a nap strike.  What to do?  What to do?

Well, the first piece of advice I want to give is TO STAY CALM

All young children from one time or another will hit a rough patch when it comes to their naps.  It usually is pinpointed around one nap in particular and most parents will begin to get nervous by the second day of the strike.  Relax…take a deep breath (in through the nose, out through the mouth…and repeat…twice).   Just because your little one is fighting their nap, it doesn’t mean they don’t need it.  On the contrary, they do need their naps but whether it happens to be a milestone or a holiday, they sometimes would rather push their boundaries in hopes that they can skip the nap so they don’t have to miss the action.  Face it, if you were them… so would you.  But good news is that if you stay consistent with your routine, this too shall pass in a few days.

If however after a week they are still resisting, it may be time to take a look at the timing of their naps and possibly make an adjustment to the amount of wake time your infant/toddler/preschooler in between sleep times.

If you are struggling every day with naps and bedtime, please give me a call.  I can help you turn your sleepless days and nights around and get your entire family the rest you need and deserve.
